Years ago after discovering that most taco seasoning packets in the grocery stores contain monosodium glutamate (MSG), I decided it was time to make taco seasoning at home.  MSG Free!

Now, not only am I no longer consuming MSG, but I’m also saving $1 or more each week at the grocery.  Not a huge amount, but a years worth of taco seasoning was costing $50 a year. Seems silly right?!

Not sure if it’s silly to have #TacoTuesday every week like we do, or having spent $50 on spice packets… We love our taco night and it gives us awesome leftovers for lunch the next day!

I do actually use taco seasoning pretty much every week for #TacoTuesday which during soccer season, turns into #TacoWednesday . Still delicious any day of the week!

So anyways… now I just make my own at home and the spices in it are pretty common spices that I think most people keep in the pantry.

I keep it in a mason jar that was ironically given to me with Hershey kisses in it a couple years ago for Christmas.  But, it’s one of my favorite jars because my BFF gave it to me… and every week when I make taco meat I think of her. <3

Taco Seasoning Recipe

  • ½ cup chili powder
  • ¼ cup onion powder
  • 2 tbsp garlic powder
  • 2 tbsp cumin
  • 1½ tbsp salt
  • 1 tbsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp paprika

I use this seasoning for all kinds of things like taco meat, my Taco Bake, sprinkled onto Parm Crisps and I’ve even sprinkled some into my scrambled eggs.

Serving suggestions are below, but you can use as much or as little as your taste buds like.

  • 1 pound of meat for a Taco Bake = 3 tablespoons of Taco Seasoning
  • 3 pounds of meat for taco night and leftovers = about 6 tablespoons of Taco Seasoning (I don’t use quite so much taco seasoning for the taco meat I use for taco night because I usually add other things like guacamole or fresh salsa to the taco also.  I feel like it’s too much ‘spice’ with all the other flavors going on. That’s just how I prefer the meat. You can add as much or as little as you want.)

Note of the spiciness – My son who is not a fan of anything spicy right now eats this mixture just fine.  He loves taco night and the Taco Bake. So if you want to kick it up a little, just add more seasoning.
