I have this love hate relationship with BBQ food since starting a low carb keto way of eating. I’ve grown up in the South enjoying BBQ with all kinds of delicious sauces my entire life and it is definitely a favorite food and flavor of mine. That’s the Love part of the relationship. The Hate part of the relationship is that all those sauces and flavor come about by the use of CARBS.
So for most of my life, I’ve enjoyed high carb BBQ food… like a lot. Although instead of sweet tea like most folks have with BBQ in the South, I’ve stood by my unsweetened tea. I know right?! The horror… live in the south, ate BBQ and drank unsweetened tea?! Yep!
So the last couple years, I’ve definitely thought about trying to make my own BBQ sauce that would be low in carbs and still full of flavor. I did try a couple times, only to fail miserably. The faces showing an obvious dislike that those recipes brought about… I still laugh at.
I don’t know, maybe it was my sad eyes, but #KetoHusband decided to try is hand at making BBQ sauce that we could eat and enjoy on BBQ foods.
On his second attempt, he came up with a BBQ sauce that I could literally drink. It was THAT good!
We used this BBQ sauce with my Fall Off The Bone Baby Back Ribs recipe.
This low carb BBQ sauce even made my son become a rib eating machine! My pre-teen son who had never tried ribs before, had this as the sauce on them and he went back for seconds. Yep!
Low Carb BBQ Sauce Recipe
- 15 oz can of tomato sauce¹
- 1/2 cup white vinegar
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 3 tsp course sea salt
- 1 tsp mustard
- 1/4 tsp maple extract
- 3 tsp Stevia SweetLeaf
Directions
(Quoted from #KetoHusband lol)
You put everything in a pan, whisk it together and heat it up. When it’s hot, it’s done.
Carb Count
- 9 servings (1/4 cup each)
- 3 grams of carbs per serving
¹ When choosing a tomato sauce you will want to use one with the lowest amount of carbs in it. I had to look through several before I found one that was just 3 grams per serving. There are many choices in the grocery store that have added sugar, or other ingredients that cause the carb count to increase. I have found that the Publix store brand is the lowest in carbs that I have available. (1/4 cup serving is 3 grams)
